"More Dead Thugs"

BOORTZ: You know what? I, for one, am tired of putting up with this crap. And you want to know why I moved out of Atlanta and only spend a couple of weeks a year in this town? That's one of the reasons. Carjackings, violence, people getting shot. It's ridiculous. This city harbors an urban culture of violence. And I want you to look around. You drive into the city. The railroad overpass is on the downtown connector covered with graffiti. And that-- That is just an advertisement for everybody coming into this town that we really don't give a damn about those who would screw up our quality of life around here. We really just don't care. We don't care enough to paint over graffiti on the overpasses that come into our city, advertising welcome to Atlanta, here's some of our finest graffiti, from some of our finest urban thugs and their little gang signs. And pick up the paper tomorrow morning. Read about all the carjackings. Read about the innocent people shot for the pure de-hell of it.

This town is starting to look like a garbage heap. And we got too damn many urban thugs, yo, ruining the quality of life for everybody. And I'll tell you what it's gonna take. You people, you are - you need to have a gun. You need to have training. You need to know how to use that gun. You need to get a permit to carry that gun. And you do in fact need to carry that gun and we need to see some dead thugs littering the landscape in Atlanta. We need to see the next guy that tries to carjack you shot dead right where he stands. We need more dead thugs in this city. And let their -- let their mommas -- let their mommas say, "He was a good boy. He just fell in with the good crowd." And then lock her ass up.
So what exactly does it take to convict someone of incitement to murder in this country?  If this doesn't qualify as a broadcaster telling his audience to kill people, what the fuck does?

And racist?  How dare you even think it?  He's a Republican, they get away with condoning murder and prejudice...

Ogre-oid: Arizona Mass Murder

Details are still coming out about the shooting of Rep. Gabriel Gifford (D-AZ) but it appears she survived a point-blank gunshot to the head that passed through her brain.  20 people were shot, of these six died including a Federal judge and a 9 year old girl that planned on running for class office.  Fox News is reporting* there is a strong link between the shooter and a right wing extremist hate group known as American Renaissance.  There is no direct link between him and the Tea Party, Sarah Palin, or Fox News' stable of frothing hate mongers, but it is early yet.  I would like you to read these quotes from Sheriff Dupnik's news conference last night (Dave & I were watching the direct feed after the horrible Saints game and were both astonished to hear this):
[just before he started answering questions]  When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government. The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be ou...trageous. And, unfortunately, Arizona I think has become sort of the capital. We have become the Mecca for prejudice and bigotry.

It's not unusual for all public officials to get threats constantly, myself included. And that's the sad thing of what's going on in America. Pretty soon, we're not going to be able to find reasonable, decent people who are willing to subject themselves to serve in public office.

[at the end of the press conference just before he handed the podium to the doctor]  Let me just say one thing, because people tend to poo-poo this business about all the vitriole that we hear inflaming the American public by people who make a living off of doing that. That may be free speech.... But it's not without consequences.

And Keith Olbermann names names and points his fingers:

Glenn Beck, the Ogre-fuck that Keeps on Fucking

[This is one of those posts that I keep starting, erasing, and re-writing (like the post about the Republican mayor and fire chief allowing a man's home to burn to the ground) because it's mostly cursing and little sense.  Hopefully I've overcome that. - AM]

Glenn Beck is dangerous.  He is inciting violence and hatred.  How close to coming right out and telling people to kill other people do you have to get to be guilty of incitement in this country?  Apparently there is no "close."  You can't suggest that someone is guilty and should be executed and be guilty of a crime, you have to actually tell someone directly to kill that person.  Glenn Beck has encouraged the assassination of our President* (though he will deny it), he has encouraged the bombing of abortion clinics (again he'll deny it), and he's encouraged attacks on institutions he thinks help poor people like ACORN or the Tides Foundation.  Now in each of these cases he (and his associates) did not actually say "assasinate the President," "bomb abortion clinics," "shoot Dr. Tiller," "film nonsense at Acorn clinics and then edit to appear incriminating," or "attack the Tides Foundation with multiple firearms" but his rhetoric implies, without a doubt, that these are things that should be done.  He even encourages his listeners to listen to what he is saying "between the sentences."  But since he doesn't explicitly say these things he cannot be tried for the crime of causing them to happen.

Beck's rhetoric inspired the real life shoot-out on I-580 in San Francisco between Byron Williams and the police.  Williams is an ex-felon that heard what Beck was telling him "between the sentences."  From the SFGate story:
"He hasn't been able to get a job because he's an ex-felon and nobody will hire him," [Williams's mother Janice Williams] said.
She said her son, who had been a carpenter and a cabinetmaker before his imprisonment, was angry about his unemployment and about "what's happening to our country."

Williams watched the news on television and was upset by "the way Congress was railroading through all these left-wing agenda items," his mother said.  [emphasis added - ED]
In two separate jailhouse interviews Williams states that Glenn Beck told him what was "really" going on.  The "news" he was watching was the hate mongering Glenn Beck and the Fox News family of hate mongers.  But there is no legal way in this country to inform Mr. Beck that his rhetoric is inspiring violence and that if it happens again he will go to prison for incitement.  Apparently we have no recourse against this horrible, horrible man for his crimes against humanity and our country.  But smoke a joint in public and go to prison.  Yep, that's American justice for you.

*Blowing his dog whistle as hard as he can Beck has insinuated the "Left" will assassinate Obama [1, 2, 3] (read:  if you kill him we'll blame the hippies) and recently he's decided that he and his Tea Party followers are on Obama's list of people to assassinate [1, 2, 3](read:  protect me from the evil Kenyan!).

And just in case you still have doubts about Glenn Beck, there's this.

Ogre-fuck: Virginia Executes Retarded Woman

Virginia joins the depths of hell usually occupied by the state of Texas today as it murders Teresa Lewis.  The civilized world takes a dim view on executions of any kind, but especially the execution of the mentally retarded or disturbed.  The EU even chimed in:
The European Union's ambassador to the U.S. wrote that the EU "considers that the execution of people with mental disorders of all types is contrary to minimum standards of human rights.
...
Lewis met Rodney Fuller and Matthew Shallenberger in a Wal-Mart store in Pittsylvania County and traded sex and money for weapons for the hired killing of her husband, Julian Clifton Lewis Jr. His son, Charles Lewis, entered the U.S. army reserve and had a $250,000 US life insurance policy, naming his father the beneficiary.
Both men would have to die for Lewis to collect.

On the night before Halloween in 2002, Shallenberger and Fuller came in and shot both men several times with shotguns. As Julian lay bleeding, Lewis grabbed his pants and wallet and gave the men the $300 inside.

Lewis's attorneys note that Shallenberger later claimed he was the mastermind and duped Lewis to get some of the insurance money. Shallenberger committed suicide in prison in 2006. He and Fuller were sentenced to life for the killings.  [more]

Ogre-oid: Israel

So someone tell me again why we support a murderous, xenophobic, apartheid, rogue state that refuses to sign the nuclear non-proliferation treaty?

Continuing Ogre-oid: Chinese Children Hacked to Death

Insanity rules.  The series of attacks on school children in their schools seems to be a violent expression of economic and social injustice in China.  This particular incident appears to stem from a property dispute, probably the State took possession of the killer's farm land to build the school.  I can't understand this drive to kill children no matter how often it is explained to me.  Does overpopulation play a role in these attacks?  When population density collides with upward mobility is this the reaction of the human hive to cull its numbers?  If so they're going to have to get with the poison gases and epidemics if they want actual change.

7 Chinese children, 2 adults hacked to death at China kindergarten; attacker commits suicide
BEIJING (AP) - An attacker with a cleaver has hacked to death seven children and two adults at a kindergarten in northwest China, the latest in a string of savage assaults on the country's schools. Eleven other children were wounded.

The killer, 48-year-old Wu Huanming, returned home after Wednesday's attack on the outskirts of the city of Hanzhong and committed suicide, the local government reported.

The official Xinhua News Agency, citing an initial police investigation, said Wu had feuded over the kindergarten property with its manager, Wu Hongying, who was among the victims.

It was the fifth such major assault on young students in China since late March and occurred despite increased security at schools countrywide.

More Civilian Afghan Corpses courtesy Uncle Sam

Today's NY Times reports that a U.S. Army convoy killed five Afghan civilians and seriously wounded up to 18--meaning more causalties could follow--when military personnel opened fire on a passanger bus that, according to the military, approached a checkpoint "at a high rate of speed." This is the latest incident where U.S. military has fired upon and killed civilians. The typical American response consists of cliches: "it's a tragic loss of life"--as though anyone needed that insight--and excuses: young soldiers have to make split-second decisions when facing approaching vehicles at checkpoints. But as one Afghan from the bus asked, "If they're concerned, why not shoot out the tires?" and thus force the bus to stop. According to the Times, over thirty people have been killed and eighty wounded by U.S military, and not a single one of these individuals posed a threat. "It seems they are opening fire on civilians intentionally," says one Afghan. Of course, most Americans couldn't care less about these civilian deaths. Since the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, as sports programming reminds us, it's all for the better that these people died. Life isn't perfect (especially if you're getting killed). And as we've learned from the Iraq, as soon as someone dies, American or not, then it isn't happening anymore, so everything is getting better. Since these five people have already died, they aren't dying right now, which means conditions are improving.

Ogre-oid: update - If You Can't Turst Reuters...

David Schlesinger, the editor in chief of Reuters, declined to run a story by one of his own reporters containing claims that the 2007 killings of two Reuters staffers in Baghdad by U.S. troops may have been war crimes.

Reuters staffers Namir Noor-Eldeen and Saeed Chmagh were killed by U.S. helicopter gunships in Baghdad in 2007. Video of the attack, which shows the journalists standing next to unidentified armed men on a Baghdad street and records the destruction of a van attempting to retrieve a wounded Chmagh, was published this week by Wikileaks.  more

This is very bothersome.  Are any of the major news organizations that can actually afford to have people in the places where news is happening not corrupted by their allegiance to advertisers?

Harper's Magazine: The Guantánamo “Suicides”

The Guantánamo “Suicides”: A Camp Delta sergeant blows the whistle

By Scott Horton

...Late on the evening of June 9 that year, three prisoners at Guantánamo died suddenly and violently. Salah Ahmed Al-Salami, from Yemen, was thirty-seven. Mani Shaman Al-Utaybi, from Saudi Arabia, was thirty. Yasser Talal Al-Zahrani, also from Saudi Arabia, was twenty-two, and had been imprisoned at Guantánamo since he was captured at the age of seventeen. None of the men had been charged with a crime, though all three had been engaged in hunger strikes to protest the conditions of their imprisonment. They were being held in a cell block, known as Alpha Block, reserved for particularly troublesome or high-value prisoners.

As news of the deaths emerged the following day, the camp quickly went into lockdown. The authorities ordered nearly all the reporters at Guantánamo to leave and those en route to turn back. The commander at Guantánamo, Rear Admiral Harry Harris, then declared the deaths “suicides.” In an unusual move, he also used the announcement to attack the dead men. “I believe this was not an act of desperation,” he said, “but an act of asymmetrical warfare waged against us.” Reporters accepted the official account, and even lawyers for the prisoners appeared to believe that they had killed themselves. Only the prisoners’ families in Saudi Arabia and Yemen rejected the notion...
